Ball & Chain, rock'n the middle ages

So we met 20 years ago in a band in New York City. We've been making music and babies together ever since. Okay, so the band broke up, but the music didn't stop growing. Neither did the babies. With two teenagers and hair growing in weird places except where we want it, we're re-launching our musical career. Sounds impossible? We think so, but what the hell. Follow our journey!

  • Wellllllll it’s been awhile

    Hello all.

Jon and I keep trucking with the music, somehow. Last week we played Abella Cafe. Great sound—not a lotta people, but big thanks to Cathy McCollough and her husband Reggie for coming out and supporting us, and BLACKSBURG MUSIC LIVE! We felt discovered!

We’ll be back at ABella’s on the 27th. See  ya there I hope!

Always With Me. Off our demo. We worked on this song back during the Gulf War. Left it alone for awhile, but sadly, it’s appropriate once again.

We dedicate this to all the men, women, and those who are too young—way too  young to know what it’s like to leave a their love.

Begin Again. This is off of our demo. I came home one day a while back, and Jon was working on a song. He had a great melody & chorus, but the verses were slow in coming. The afternoon turned into one of those magical times where you sit down and time disappears as you lose yourself in collaboration. We didn’t write the song, our relationship, that “3rd party” did.

  • counting back the years…

On Sunday we were down on the Market in Radford shooting some photos that we hope to use to promote our rag tag selves. It’s been 20 years since Jon and I last did a photo shoot together. As I watched Parv taking shots of Jon, with our son Dante, 13 1/2 there to help—I looked at my handsome husband as he leaned against a brick building. Just there. Not pretentious cuz that wouldn’t be Jon. I thought, “Man, he still looks pretty much the same 20 years on.” Okay, some crows feet around the eyes, which personally, I think makes him look sexier. Certainly not the boy I fell in love with, but like the worn and wizened brick he leaned against, even better. Is it harder doing this with kids? uhhhhh……duh.… . but it’s better. I think of how self-serving and “precious” I thought of my artistic self back when Jon and I were working on our band Ransom in NYC. Damn good band, and it wasn’t like we were THAT young, but fershur children bring a perspective of life that you can’t put a price tag on. They feed the muses—hell, they ARE the muses. And we feed them. Cuz they eat a lot. Especially the boy child. But I digress. It remains to be seen if “the public”, whoever the hell they are, will find new music from middle-agers palatable. Maybe if they squint their eyes? Will the music stand on its own? Will I have to have a slug fest with Lady GaGa? Now that would be fun.

While we work on our new CD, here is a favorite: Crazy. Jon wrote this some time ago, but I love it. It just scratches that certain itch. Or, for those who have dealt with the psycho girlfriend or boyfriend—maybe a little therapy.

  • New photos comin’.

    ballnchainmusic:

So here we go. This past weekend we got new photos taken by photographer Parv Sethi who goes above and beyond what I’ve had a photographer do at a photo shoot. Big man can get in some interesting position to get the shot he wants.

We’ll load those up as soon as we can.

We had a great gig at the River Company this past Friday! Three sets and my voice still fighting a cold didn’t give out. A broad range of generations. The youngest looked 3 months, the oldest; death warmed over. But they seemed to like the music. That’s what warmed them up. Hey seriously—the food was great and so were the acoustics.

We don’t know where this trip will lead us. Very different with a 13 yr. old and 15 yr. old, both of us working full time—but the music won’t let go, and 20 years has taught us that if we don’t play, we will shrivel up and blow away.

    Stay tuned!
